Jean
Smith talks about
“Healthcare Insurance for Individuals and Small
Businesses”
Historically, it
has been very difficult for individuals and small
business owners to obtain quality healthcare insurance
at reasonable prices. Happily, that is changing.
Our current economic engine is being fueled by
entrepreneurs and small businesses. Thus,
healthcare insurance companies are taking a look at this
growing market and designing good, affordable products
to meet the demand. Jean will highlight those
products and those people who specialize in this field.
Jean will also discuss the need for all of us to plan
our healthcare future as carefully as we plan other
aspects of our retirement.
So whether you are a healthy woman working for a major
firm or a self-employed woman on her own, come learn
what options are available to you now and in the future
for your healthcare needs.
Born here in Florida, Jean grew up primarily in New
Jersey although her family also spent a good deal of
time in Florida An alumna of Douglass College of
Rutgers University, Jean also holds a Series 7 (the
Stockbroker’s license), a Series 65 (Registered
Investment Advisor) and a Florida Insurance License to
sell Life, Health and Variable Annuity products.
Jean has spent nearly 25 years in the financial services
industry beginning in 1972 working as a Senior Client
Specialist with a firm that did computerized
record-keeping for Wall Street firms. After moving
to Colorado in 1979, Jean spent 13 years as an Assistant
Vice President - Marketing with the Aquila Funds
headquartered in New York. In 2000 Jean’s family
moved to Florida where her husband joined IBM, and in
Feburary, 2003 she joined AFLAC. In her experience
in New York and Colorado Jean worked with countless
financial firms, and finds AFLAC, unquestionably, the
best firm she has ever seen for the superior way they
treat both their employees and, more importantly, their
policyholders.
This April Jean and her husband, Tomec, will celebrate
their 33rd wedding anniversary and are the
parents of three children…and two very spoiled cats. |

Brent
Winans - A gun and the
First Thousand Days. Curbing Violence by Rocking the
Cradle.
The costs of
criminal violence in our society are staggering. The
U.S. Justice Department now estimates that 1 in 15
residents of the U.S. will spend part of their lives in
state or federal prisons. From 1983 to 2003 the
number of inmates in federal, state and local prisons
more than tripled from under 650,000 to over 2,000,000.
In the same period the cost of our federal, state and
local criminal justice systems more than quadrupled
from under $40 billion to over $185 billion.
(Florida’s total state budget is about $70 billion.)
But what to do?
Recent studies have shown conclusively
that the roots of violence are in the nursery.
Science is beginning to understand how the human brain
develops. The first 1,000 days of life – from
conception to age two, are critical to connecting to
society. Before we can talk, we have learned (or too
often failed to learn) how to live in society. Abuse
and neglect in those early days ruins lives.
Effective interventions are
possible, and there are good scientific research-based
studies that describe cost-effective measures that work
– if we have the will to implement them.
Brent Winans
will be speaking to us on A Gun and The First
Thousand Days – Curbing Violence by Rocking the Cradle.
Brent Winans is business man turned non-profit
executive. He was formerly the Vice President of Risk
Management for an international mining conglomerate out
of Denver and moved to Florida over eight years ago to
join the marketing department of the NCCI in Boca Raton.
Brent says he decided to find
a place where he could combine his business background
with his heart. He served for three years as the
Director of Development for the Community Foundation for
Palm Beach and Martin Counties and has since worked with
other philanthropic organizations. Brent describes
himself as a businessman with a heart for kids and
families and a hard-nosed commitment to find out and do
what works. He has been recommended to us as a dynamic
speaker with a passionate message about how to protect
our safety, our children and our pocketbooks.
